Your Joints in Queensland’s Heat
Joints feeling the heat?
Hot days can do strange things to your body, especially your joints. For some, warmth brings relief. For others, it means swelling, stiffness, or that heavy, aching feeling by sundown.
In Queensland, the combination of heat and humidity can turn mild discomfort into something harder to ignore. Whether you live with arthritis or are just starting to notice the difference, here’s what could be going on, and how to stay more comfortable through the sticky season.
Why hot days feel harder
-
Dehydration
Sweating more = losing more fluid, including the stuff that keeps your joints lubricated. When you’re low on hydration, joints can feel stiffer and less cushioned. Your body might even retain water as a backup, causing swelling and pressure around the joints [1].
-
Heat-related inflammation
Hot weather can cause blood vessels to expand. For anyone with arthritis or sensitive joints, that can mean more swelling, especially in the hands, feet or knees [2]
-
Fatigue
We all know how a scorching day can zap your energy. And when you move less, your joints are the first to let you know.
-
Poor circulation
Humidity can mess with blood flow, often causing puffiness in the limbs. If your joints feel heavy, tight, or swollen by mid-afternoon, sluggish circulation could be the culprit [3].
How to keep your joints happy in the heat
-
Hydrate like it’s your job
Your joints need water to stay cushioned and comfy. Sip regularly (before you even feel thirsty) and up your intake when you’re sweating more than usual. A splash of electrolytes can give your hydration a helpful boost.
-
Move when it’s cool
Steamy afternoons? Not ideal. Aim for early morning or evening walks, gentle yoga, or a dip in the pool. A little movement goes a long way in keeping joints mobile, just stick to the coolest part of the day.
-
Cool your core
Cool showers, fans, icy drinks, a cold compress on the neck, whatever helps you cool down. If your joints are flaring up, a cold pack can ease swelling and make things feel a whole lot better.
-
Put your feet up (literally)
Swollen knees or ankles? Rest them above heart level for 10–15 minutes to help drain excess fluid. Bonus: it feels great.
-
Eat (and drink) smart
Hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon and leafy greens are your summer allies. Cutting back on salty snacks and alcohol can also help prevent bloating and stiffness [4].
-
Back it up with support
Some days, your joints need backup. A quality supplement with ingredients like Epiitalis® and vitamin E can help ease inflammation and support smoother movement over time [5].
Hello, happier joints
Summer in Queensland is no joke, but you don’t have to let the heat get the better of your joints. With a little planning, plenty of water and some movement that works for you, you can keep your joints cool, supported and ready for anything the season throws at you.
